Welcome to my 365!

Well, I'm back at it again. I tried this last year and piddled out sometime in March. I didn't have a theme of any kind and I think that made it more difficult. I had no specific goal for my picture. So, this year, I'm going for self-portraits. I've seen some really incredible SP 365s, and I know I can never live up to them, but that's ok. As it is, I'm always behind the camera. Hopefully through this project, I'll be able to have pictures of me with my children. I don't have near enough of those.

I'm also hoping this will help me to become more comfortable with who I am and how I look. I suppose I'm similar to many other women in that I see every single flaw, real or imagined. I realize most other people don't even notice many of these things. God made me the way I am and I need to learn to be content with that.

Finally, I hope this project helps me take my photography to a new level. I want to use other kinds of cameras besides my pro dSLR. That's an easy camera to use. I can make adjustments for low light or me/people moving. I want to learn to focus on seeing what's there and capturing it rather than trying to "fix" it after the fact. I plan to use my iPhone, point and shoot, and hopefully even a pin hole camera that I plan to build (although there will be a delay in posting since this uses film). Speaking of film, that's another thing I want to play around with by the end of the year.

I hope you enjoy my journey as much as I do!

Ahhh… the chiropractor! | Meday 2-8-10

I have a crummy back. So, I need a back doc. I used to go regularly, years ago, but different needs within the family cause this to drop. Moms always sacrifice, right? Well, I’ve finally started going again. It’s been so great to have things working the way they should. I see Dr. Emily McCabe in Champaign. She’s awesome. She loves seeing pregnant women and children and is even certified in methods specific to them both. I highly recommend seeing her if you are either one of those. But even if you aren’t? Go see her anyway. She rocks. Oh, and she’s gentle. Well, unless you sleep on the couch, and really mess yourself up. Then she might kind of beat you up to get things back where they should be. I think maybe it was punishment. It sure felt like it for the next 2 days after, anyway.

Couple of boys | Sonday 2-7-10

I couldn’t decide which picture to use. So here are both. So weird after missing a couple of days, and then taking forever to update, here I actually have two pics to choose from!

Well, left is Noah. He’s 9, smart as a whip but so lazy!! He’s probably the smartest kid in his class, but doesn’t “feel like” doing homework, so has one of the worst grades. Sigh. What to do with this kid. He just needs more of a challenge, I think. He’s bored with the work. And really, who wants to do boring work?

On the right is Ian. He’s 3 1/2 and the most adorable 3 year old ever. He is so much fun and incredibly loving. He tells me routinely that I’m his favorite little girl. He tells Emily that, too. That’s ok. He loves to cuddle and play dinosaurs. I’ve never had a kid before who was so one track minded about something. I mean the dinosaurs, not the cuddling.

Both of these guys have hemophilia. That means they are missing a clotting factor (factor viii, in their case). As a result, their blood doesn’t clot properly. This doesn’t mean they will bleed to death from a paper cut. It does mean that when they twist their ankle, they have to get an IV infusion of artificial factor because they will bleed for hours and days into their joint. Internal bleeding is their issue, not external. They don’t bleed faster, just longer. Noah gets an infusion twice a week to keep his levels as normal as they can be to prevent bleeds from happening. Ian gets treated when he has an injury. Noah tolerates the needle really well, so it’s easy to do his factor. Ian rights and cries a lot. He should be getting twice weekly doses like his brother, but I don’t have the mental energy to fight with him and have him look at me with those big brown, tear filled brown eyes while I inflict pain on him that he just does not yet understand. Yes, I do it. I give IV infusion to my two boys, at the kitchen table. I’ll have to take a picture of Noah getting his factor sometime. He gets it on Monday and Thursday. Doesn’t work for my theme, but I can put an extra up. After all, I’m making the rules, right?

Making Valentines | 2-6-10 Daughterday

Meet Olivia. She is my youngest daughter. She’s 6 and in kindergarten this year. A big part of kindergarten is learning to read and write. Here she is writing out her Valentine’s Day cards for her classmates. She wasn’t laughing about doing that. She got kind of embarrassed when I showed up with my camera. She still likes me to take her picture. And she’s cute. So she will probably be a frequent Saturday guest.

Mmmm Quizno’s | 2-5-10 Fryday

This is my favorite sandwich place. They actually quit making my most favorite sandwich, but after a short mourning period, I returned and found other sandwiches I like. Not as much, but yummy enough to keep me coming back. This is a dip. I love dips. There is nothing like a good au jous to make a good sandwich great.

The Greatest Cat, Ever! | 2-4-10 Fursday

This is Max. He is really the best cat ever. We rescued him from the Champaign County Humane Society when he was just 6 weeks old. Someone had dumped him and his litter mates in a cemetery when they were just a day old. Thankfully they were found quickly as they could not have lived long without a mama to feed them. We brought him home and he fit into my cupped hands. We all fell in love instantly. That was nearly 5 years ago. He’s a giant now. He is happy to let you hold him and pet him as much as you want, but will leave you alone, too. He’s also an amazing hunter. Rabbits and mice, sure. But he also catches birds. He’s kept our houses mouse free since he was big enough to catch them. For that, we are grateful. I hope we get another 15 years from this guy.

Tom, doing what he does | 2-3-10 Wedsday

Tom site and plays with his phone. A lot. He uses it to check Facebook, read email, watch silly shows. He really and truly loves his iPhone.

2-2-10 | Twosday

I thought it was kind of fun that my first “Twosday” fell on the second day of the second month of the year. So I thought I’d use that. It seems like 2010 just started and here we are, into February already. Time seems to go so much faster now that I’m older.

Peeling Potatoes | Meday 1-2-10

This is one of my least favorite cooking tasks. When we were first married, I made instant potatoes. I’m not sure what caused me to make the switch, but I’m glad I did. Real mashed potatoes are so yummy, especially when made Pioneer Woman style. But it’s a lot of work and I don’t enjoy it.

Change of plans

I spent the month doing self portraits and I decided I don’t like doing self portraits. I do a lot of the same thing every single day. So coming up with something new and different was really hard. So I have a new plan. It still involves a weekly self portrait, but I get to include the rest of my family, too. Here it is:

Sunday-Sonday: Pictures of one or all or any combination of my boys.

Monday-Meday: Self portrait day

Tuesday-Twosday: This gives me some freedom. Two of anything, or anyway to represent the number two.

Wednesday-Wedsday: Pictures of the man I’m wedded to. He’s so photogenic so I’ll enjoy these days.

Thursday-Fursday: We have a cat and a dog. They will be featured here. But if I happen across some other furry creature on this day, well, they count, too.

Friday-Fryday: I don’t fry everything, but it was the best I could do. This day will feature food shots. I really like taking pictures of food.

Saturday-Daughterday: See Sonday, only substitute girls for boys.

So, that the new plan for my 365. I think I will have a lot more fun with this and I feel like I’ll be able to tap my brand of creativity better with this.

Catch Up!

So, I fell really behind on posting my images. I am finishing January with one post, then a special update and then February will start. I left off with Jan. 17th, so here we go starting with Jan. 18th:

This is a typical evening in our house. We enjoy several TV shows, so can often be found catching up on what’s been DVRed.

Jan. 19 – OOPS!! MIss number 1.

Jan. 20

I was out of town this morning, and Emily was watching Ian. She called me just as I was on my way home to tell me Ian had burned his hand on the stove. It was a really ugly burn, covering his entire palm and the tips of all fingers. I doused him in aloe gel and later colloidal silver. He kept it on ice for the rest of the day and over night. By the next morning, despite having half a dozen blisters, he acted like it was all better. The burned skin is now peeling off. Looks like no scarring, though.

Jan 21. OOPS again. Sigh. Number 2. I wonder how many of these I’ll have at the end of the year.

Jan. 22

I feel defeated by the never ending laundry monster in my house all the time.

Jan 23

But for now, at least, I get to claim victory!!

Jan. 24

I’m thinking it’s time to schedule a visit with my stylist for a bit of color. Ug.

Jan 25

I made a yummy dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and garlic bread. The fun thing about this meal for me is that I used a whole bunch of my new Pampered Chef stuff. My awesome mixing bowels  and small scoop for mixing the meatballs, very cool strainers for the pasta, served on my bamboo platter, and the bamboo bowel for the salad. I really, really love Pampered Chef stuff. Oh, and I used my cool NON Pampered Chef bread basket with warming stone that my sister gave me for Christmas. I’ve wanted one forever and I love it.

Jan. 26

My favorite facial feature is my eyes. I really like blue eyes, but I have these mega dark brown eyes. They are so brown they look black. Which is cool. If I have to have dark eyes, I’m glad they are so intensely brown and not an ugly muddy color.

Jan. 27

Wednesday nights, the kids all have church activities, except Hannah. So, Hannah and I work in the nursery. It’s a lot of fun and Hannah enjoys the babies. She’s telling the story here.

Jan. 28 OK, so I took a picture this day. Several, in fact. On my iPhone. But now they’re gone. Ian likes to play with my phone, so maybe he deleted them. I don’t know. But I refuse to count this day as a miss, since I absolutely DID take a self portrait!

Jan. 29

My daily routine. How in the world am I going to get this guy to sleep in his own bed??? He won’t even sleep in my bed unless he is laying on me. It’s going to be a challenge. That’s for sure.

Jan. 30

We went to the library today. Ian found tons of dinosaur books. This particular one is interesting in that the two main characters throughout the entire book get eaten in the end. Survival of the fittest, I guess.

Jan. 31

I have body image issues. I mentioned that at the top of this blog. However, one thing I am very content with is my legs. I don’t have the legs of an over weight person. I’m an apple. I carry it all in the middle. I heard once that apples are more prone to heart disease. Something to be aware of, I guess. For now, I like my legs.

And that’s it for January!!
